Dr. Nadeesha Chandrasena, who invented the world’s first-ever two-tier Smart Drain system, and was awarded the 2025 Global Intellectual Property Award, arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake last night (19th).
During rainy days, urban drainage systems often get blocked due to plastic and polythene waste, resulting in frequent flooding. The Smart Two-Tier Drain invention addresses this issue by having the upper tier remove plastics and polythene, while the lower tier allows rainwater to flow freely.
This innovation significantly contributes to flood control worldwide.
The awards ceremony was organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and held in Geneva. A total of 780 innovative creations from 95 countries were presented at the event.
Dr. Nadeesha Chandrasena, who received this prestigious award, arrived at the Katunayake Airport at 6:30 PM yesterday (19th) on Emirates flight EK-652 from the Maldives.
