The sluice gates of the Wimalasurendra Reservoir were opened this morning following heavy rainfall in its catchment areas, according to the Nuwara Eliya Disaster Management Centre. The reservoir began to overflow as a result of continuous downpours over the past few days.

Authorities have issued a warning to communities living downstream, noting that the water level of the Kelani River may rise significantly due to the spillover from the reservoir.

In a related development, engineers overseeing the central hill reservoir system stated that persistent rainfall along the western slopes has brought the Castlereagh and Maussakelle reservoirs dangerously close to their respective spill levels.

The public is urged to exercise caution, especially in low-lying areas, as further rainfall could exacerbate flooding risks. Emergency response teams remain on standby.
