Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called on the government to urgently implement a comprehensive national plan to address the escalating human-elephant conflict across Sri Lanka.

Speaking at a recent public event, Premadasa emphasized that the issue has reached a critical level, affecting the lives and livelihoods of rural communities and resulting in tragic losses of both human and elephant lives.

“There is a clear and broad consensus in the country regarding the urgent need to resolve this crisis. We cannot delay any further,” he said, urging the government to act swiftly and decisively.

He further stated that the opposition is ready to cooperate fully and contribute through its public representation mandate to ensure the successful formulation and execution of a long-term solution.

The human-elephant conflict has worsened in recent years, with increasing incidents of crop damage, property destruction, and fatalities reported in several districts. Environmentalists and wildlife experts have repeatedly stressed the need for a strategic, island-wide approach to mitigate the issue.

Mr.Premadasa's remarks come at a time when local communities and conservation groups are calling for sustainable, science-backed policies including elephant corridors, fencing systems, and relocation strategies, alongside community education and support programs.

The Opposition Leader concluded his statement by reiterating that resolving this issue should transcend party politics, as it directly affects the future of Sri Lanka’s rural population and its endangered elephant population.
