Court of Appeal Nullifies Death Sentence of 80-Year-Old Woman

The woman was found guilty by the Hambantota High Court in 2023 in connection with a murder committed in 1993. Following the trial, the High Court sentenced her to death.
However, the Court of Appeal, upon reviewing an appeal filed by the woman, has ruled that the conviction cannot be upheld.
The appellate court noted that the evidence presented against her during the trial was contradictory and inconsistent, raising serious doubts about the validity of the original verdict.
As a result, the Court of Appeal concluded that the death sentence could not be confirmed and officially nullified the ruling of the Hambantota High Court.
The judgment marks a significant moment in the judicial review of long-standing criminal cases and highlights the importance of consistency and credibility in evidence presented in court.
