The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has issued a strong wind advisory for 15 districts across Sri Lanka, as the active south-west monsoonal condition continues to influence the island’s weather patterns.

According to the advisory, wind speeds of up to 60 kmph are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-Western, and North-Central provinces. Other areas of the country may also experience fairly strong winds reaching up to 40 kmph intermittently.

Authorities have cautioned that the strong winds may cause damage to roof tiles, roofing sheets, power and communication lines, and could lead to the uprooting or breaking of trees. Agricultural activities could also be affected, with crops such as paddy, bananas, papayas, and other orchards at high risk of wind-related damage.

Maritime activities may also be disrupted, particularly for small boats and harbor yachts. In addition, low-lying coastal areas are warned of possible sea water inundation.

The public is urged to take all necessary precautions to ensure personal safety and minimize property damage.
