The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ warning for strong winds and rough seas along the coastal belt stretching from Puttalam to Pottuvil, via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.

According to the Met. Department, these sea areas are likely to experience rough to very rough conditions, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 60–70 kmph. Wave heights are expected to rise between 2.5 to 3.0 meters, increasing the risk of dangerous sea surges along the affected coastal regions.

As a result, there is a heightened threat of nearshore sea inundation due to elevated wave activity in these areas. The Meteorology Department has strongly advised all fishing and naval communities to avoid venturing into sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil over the next 24 hours.

Additionally, those engaged in maritime activities from Puttalam to Trincomalee, via Mannar and Kankesanthurai, are urged to remain cautious and vigilant, as adverse sea conditions may also affect those regions.

The public is advised to stay updated with official weather alerts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of increased maritime risk.
