Leading dermatologist Dr. Janaka Akarawita has raised concern over a significant increase in Tinea (ringworm) infections across the country, warning that the fungal condition is becoming more resistant to treatment.

According to Dr. Akarawita, Tinea now accounts for nearly 20% of dermatology clinic visits, a dramatic rise compared to figures from a decade ago. “This surge is alarming. We’re seeing more aggressive and recurring cases that do not respond well to standard antifungal therapies,” he noted.

Tinea is a highly contagious fungal infection that affects the skin, scalp, and nails, often appearing as circular, itchy rashes. The infection spreads through direct contact or by sharing personal items such as towels, clothing, or grooming tools.

With resistance to treatment on the rise, the public is strongly advised to:

Maintain good personal hygiene

Avoid sharing personal items

Keep skin dry and clean

Seek early medical attention if symptoms appear

Health officials stress the importance of public awareness and early intervention to contain the spread of this common yet increasingly stubborn skin infection.
