Showers and Strong Winds Expected Across Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather forecast for 17 July 2025, warning of intermittent showers and strong winds across several regions of Sri Lanka.

Showers will occur at times in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts.

Western and North-western Provinces may experience several spells of showers.

Uva, Northern, and Eastern Provinces are likely to see showers or thundershowers in the afternoon or night.

Wind Advisory: Strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph are expected over:

Western slopes of the central hills

Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western, and North-central Provinces

The public is advised to take necessary precautions against damages from localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Marine Weather Forecast – Next 24 Hours

Rain Conditions:

Showers are likely in sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Matara via Galle.

Wind Conditions:

Winds will be Westerly to South-westerly at 30–40 kmph.

Wind speeds may increase up to 55–60 kmph in sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.

Wind speeds of 45–50 kmph are also expected off the coast from Puttalam to Vakarai via Mannar, Kankasanthurai, and Trincomalee.

Sea Conditions:

Seas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota will be rough to very rough with wave heights reaching 2.5 to 3.0 meters.

These areas may also experience coastal surges due to high sea waves.

Sea areas from Puttalam to Vakarai via Mannar, Kankasanthurai, and Trincomalee may be fairly rough at times.

Advisory: Naval and fishing communities are urged to remain vigilant and follow updates issued by the Meteorology Department.
