
Navy intercepts 03 dinghies for smuggling 1,349,640 prescription drugs

The Sri Lanka Navy maintains constant vigilance, carrying out patrols and search operations along the island's coastline to curb the smuggling of a wide range of items into the island.

In continuation of these efforts, the search operation was carried out by a team of Special Boat Squadron attached to the Naval Detachment Uchchamunai, belonging to SLNS Vijaya. Upon detection of 03 suspicious dinghies in the Wellamundalama sea area, naval personnel intercepted those dinghies and recovered 18 sacks stuffed with 1,349,640 prescription drugs being smuggled. Together with the haul of prescription drugs, 03 dinghies and 05 suspects in connection to the illegal act were taken into naval custody.
The suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Mohoththuwaram, Kurakkangena, Wannimundalam and Sinnakudurippu in Kalpitiya, from 22 to 44 years of age. The suspects together with prescription drugs and dinghies were handed over to the Excise Special Unit in Puttalam for onward legal action.
