The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Dr. Maheshi Wijeratne, a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, who was recently arrested and remanded over allegations of corruption.

Dr. Wijeratne was taken into custody on suspicion of engaging in unethical practices by allegedly selling surgical equipment to patients at inflated prices, violating hospital protocols and ethical standards.

The arrest followed a preliminary investigation initiated after multiple complaints were received by health authorities and law enforcement.

During today’s hearing, the court considered submissions made by both the prosecution and the defense. The Magistrate granted bail under strict conditions, including a cash bail and sureties, while also ordering Dr. Wijeratne to surrender her passport and refrain from interfering with the ongoing investigations.

Further inquiries are being conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with hospital administrative records and patient testimonies expected to play a crucial role in the case.

The Ministry of Health has also announced the appointment of an internal committee to examine hospital procurement processes and ensure transparency in the provision of medical supplies.

The case has sparked widespread public interest, drawing attention to corruption in the healthcare sector and the need for stricter regulatory oversight.
