The beloved wild tusker ‘Bhathiya’, who had been receiving veterinary care for several days, sadly succumbed to his injuries this morning (15), wildlife officials confirmed.

‘Bhathiya’ had sustained serious gunshot wounds approximately two months ago, prompting an emergency rescue and treatment operation by a team of veterinarians and wildlife experts. Despite their tireless efforts, the majestic elephant’s condition remained critical.

Adding to his injuries, the tusker recently met with another misfortune when he fell into a water pit, worsening his health and further complicating the recovery process.

Wildlife conservationists and local communities mourn the loss of ‘Bhathiya’, a symbol of Sri Lanka’s endangered wildlife, while also calling for stronger action against poaching and improved protection for elephants in the wild.
