The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather forecast warning of intermittent showers and strong winds across several parts of the country, along with rough sea conditions around the island.

Showers are expected throughout the day in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the districts of Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara. Meanwhile, the Western and North-Western Provinces may experience occasional showers.

In the afternoon or night, isolated showers or thundershowers are likely in parts of the Uva and Northern Provinces, as well as in Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

Strong winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are forecast over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-Western, and North-Central Provinces.

The public is urged to take necessary precautions against possible damages caused by strong winds and lightning, particularly during thundershowers.

Marine Weather Warning:

Maritime areas surrounding the island are also expected to be affected. Showers are predicted in sea regions off the coast from Colombo to Matara via Galle.

Winds over the sea will be westerly to south-westerly, blowing at 30–40 kmph. However, in the sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota, wind speeds may rise to 50–60 kmph, making these waters rough to very rough. Similarly, seas off the coast from Puttalam to Vakarai via Mannar, Kankasanthurai, and Trincomalee may experience wind speeds of 45–50 kmph, making them fairly rough.

Wave heights are expected to reach between 2.5 and 3.0 meters in the roughest areas, with a risk of sea surges along the coast from Puttalam to Pottuvil. The Department has requested naval and fishing communities to remain alert and exercise caution during this period.
