A goods train transporting high-speed diesel caught fire on Sunday morning near Tiruvallur, according to a railway official. The blaze started in one of the wagons and rapidly spread to others.
No injuries or casualties have been reported so far.
Firefighting teams have been dispatched to the scene, and the overhead electric supply for train operations in the area has been shut down as a precaution.
Southern Railway told PTI that, "As a precautionary measure, local train services have been temporarily suspended. Also, 8 express trains have been cancelled and 5 other trains diverted and 8 trains short-terminated,"
Railway officials are on-site actively handling the situation, with restoration efforts underway. Normal services are expected to resume as soon as possible, the statement said.
