The Department of Meteorology has issued a comprehensive weather forecast for 13th July 2025, indicating the likelihood of intermittent showers and strong winds across several regions of the island, along with rough sea conditions in southern and eastern coastal areas.

Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with the districts of Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle, and Matara, are expected to experience showers at times.

The North-western province may experience intermittent spells of rain.

Uva and Eastern provinces could see showers or thundershowers at a few places during the afternoon or night.

Strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph can be expected over:

The western slopes of the central hills

Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western, and North-central provinces


Marine Weather Forecast (Next 24 Hours):

🌊 Rain Conditions:

  • Showers are likely in the sea areas stretching from Colombo to Matara via Galle.

💨 Wind Conditions:

General wind flow will be Westerly to South-westerly, with speeds of 30-40 kmph.

Gusts could increase to:

  • 55-65 kmph: Off the coast from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota
  • 50-60 kmph: From Galle to Vakarai via Colombo, Puttalam, Kankasanthurai, and Trincomalee

🌊 Sea Conditions:

  • Sea areas from Galle to Pottuvil (via Matara and Hambantota) may be very rough at times.
  • Waters from Galle to Vakarai (via Colombo, Puttalam, and Kankasanthurai) will be fairly rough to rough.
  • Wave heights of 2.5 – 3.0 meters are expected, potentially causing nearshore surges from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
  • Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised not to venture into sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota for the next 24 hours.
  • Those operating in other sea regions are urged to remain vigilant.
  • The general public is requested to take precautions against localized strong winds and lightning during possible thundershowers.
