The Supreme Court has issued a directive to the University Grants Commission (UGC) to strictly enforce the set of guidelines developed to prevent ragging in universities across Sri Lanka.

In a significant ruling delivered in response to a fundamental rights petition, the court emphasized the urgent need for effective measures to combat ragging, which continues to plague higher education institutions. The petition was filed by Pasindu Hirushan de Silva, a first-year university student who sustained severe physical and brain injuries as a result of ragging in 2020.

The panel of judges also instructed the Minister of Education and Higher Education to ensure the provision of necessary financial, technical, and infrastructural support to facilitate the full implementation of these guidelines.
