A Deputy Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from a businessman.
The arrest took place this afternoon at the main office of the Inland Revenue Department, following a complaint lodged by a businessman from Piliyandala. According to CIABOC, the official had initially demanded Rs. 100,000 to issue a tax clearance report for a business located in Dematagoda.
Following negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs. 50,000. CIABOC confirmed that the official had already accepted Rs. 42,000 of the bribe on July 3, prior to being apprehended.
Investigations are currently underway, and the suspect is expected to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
