The National Accident Prevention Week officially commences today (July 7) and will continue until July 11, with a series of public awareness programs planned across the country.

According to the Ministry of Health, accidents claim the lives of 10,000 to 12,000 people annually in Sri Lanka—accounting for nearly 8% of the country’s total deaths. Disturbingly, around 30 people die daily due to various accidents, with 7,500 to 8,000 of them succumbing before reaching a hospital.

Authorities aim to use this week to highlight safety measures and reduce preventable deaths through nationwide education efforts.
