A large-scale special search operation conducted in Sri Lanka's Southern Province led to the arrest of 457 individuals, police confirmed today.

The operation was carried out across key areas including the Matara and Galle districts as well as Elpitiya, with the aim of cracking down on illegal activities and enhancing public security.

According to a statement from the Office of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Southern Province, more than 1,000 police officers joined forces with 500 personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force to conduct the high-intensity operation.

The arrested individuals are currently being questioned in connection with a range of offences, including drug-related crimes, outstanding warrants, and gang-related activity. Authorities stated that several weapons and narcotics were also seized during the raids.

The Police Department emphasized that such joint operations will continue in the coming weeks as part of a broader strategy to curb criminal activity and ensure law and order in the region.
