A new VAT refund counter for tourists was officially opened at Bandaranaike International Airport on July 4. The initiative, led by the Department of Inland Revenue, allows foreign visitors who have stayed in Sri Lanka for less than 90 days and spent over Rs. 50,000 on VAT-inclusive purchases to claim a tax refund.
The service was inaugurated by Ministers Sunil Handunnetti and Anil Jayantha, following a proposal approved in March 2025 by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority and the Ministry of Industries. The move aims to boost local product sales among tourists and enhance VAT collection efficiency.
Officials, including NGJA Chairman Naveen Suriyaarachchi, attended the event. A media briefing will soon be held to further educate the tourism and business sectors.
