The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism has announced the establishment of a Sri Lankan diplomatic mission in Cyprus, set to commence operations on July 20.

The move aims to provide essential consular services to the nearly 15,000 Sri Lankans residing in the country.

The Government of Cyprus has granted approval for the mission, and a delegation appointed by the Ministry is scheduled to depart for Cyprus on July 15 to initiate operations.

Minister Wijitha Herath stated that the reopening of the mission is a direct response to persistent appeals from the Sri Lankan community in Cyprus. He also noted that the office is expected to enhance employment opportunities and trade investments between the two countries.

A Sri Lankan diplomatic mission previously operated in Cyprus but was shut down several years ago, forcing residents to rely on the embassy in Ankara, Turkey, for services. The new mission reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of overseas Sri Lankans.
