Sri Lanka's Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekar, firmly stated that Katchatheevu Island belongs to Sri Lanka and will not be handed over under any circumstances.
His remarks came in response to comments by Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar, who claimed that the fishing rights of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters allegedly granted under an emergency agreement had been violated.
Minister Chandrasekar criticized the illegal fishing activities by Indian fishermen in Northern Sri Lankan waters, citing their role in the depletion of marine resources. He further noted that discussions surrounding Katchatheevu often resurface during election periods in India, suggesting that the issue is used for political gain.
