In an effort to curb the rising threat of mosquito-borne illnesses, the Ministry of Health will launch Dengue and Chikungunya Prevention Week starting tomorrow, June 30th. The program will run until July 6th, targeting 16 high-risk districts across the country.

The campaign comes in response to a significant number of dengue cases reported in recent months. According to health authorities, 27,932 cases of dengue fever have been recorded so far this year, along with 16 related deaths.

Speaking on the importance of public cooperation, Director General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena, emphasized that controlling the spread of these diseases requires the active involvement of communities, local authorities, and health officials.

“We urge every citizen to participate in cleanup activities, eliminate mosquito breeding sites, and follow medical guidelines,” Dr. Gunawardena stated.

The week-long initiative will include public awareness campaigns, house-to-house inspections, fumigation programs, and community mobilization efforts. Health officials stress that timely prevention is crucial, especially during the monsoon season when stagnant water creates ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

The Ministry of Health advises the public to seek medical attention promptly if symptoms such as high fever, severe joint pain, headache, or rash appear.
