A major search and rescue operation is underway off the southern coast of Sri Lanka after two fishing boats were involved in a maritime accident on Thursday evening (27th). The incident is believed to have occurred following a collision between one of the fishing vessels and a commercial ship.

The vessel that departed from Dondra Fisheries Harbour reportedly had five fishermen on board. One of the fishermen has been rescued and safely brought ashore, while the remaining four are still missing. Another fishing boat involved, believed to have left from the Kalutara area, has also reported missing personnel, bringing the total number of missing fishermen to six.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the Sri Lanka Navy promptly dispatched a search and rescue vessel to the affected area. Defence Secretary has ordered the immediate deployment of Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) assets, including a Y-12 aircraft and a Bell-412 helicopter, to assist in aerial reconnaissance and expedite the rescue mission.

A special naval search operation is currently ongoing, with coordinated efforts from maritime and aerial units. Authorities have not yet released the names of the missing fishermen as the search continues amid challenging sea conditions.

The Navy urges any vessels operating in the vicinity of Galle and Kalutara to remain vigilant and report any sightings that may assist the ongoing rescue effort.
