The tragic incident occurred on the morning of 26 June, when a group of students from the University of Colombo and the University of Moratuwa were engaged in a snorkeling expedition to observe the seabed in the newly developed coastal area.
According to police reports, the student—identified as a resident of Asgiriya, Gampaha—was reported missing during the underwater activity. A joint search operation involving the Sri Lanka Navy and Police was launched immediately after the alert was raised.
The body was located early today and has since been transported to the Colombo National Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while university officials have expressed their condolences to the student’s family.
Authorities have reminded the public to exercise caution when engaging in water-based activities, especially in unfamiliar or unmonitored areas.
