A tense situation unfolded today at the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha as two members of the National People’s Power (NPP) party were allegedly abducted on their way to cast their votes in the crucial election to appoint a new Chairman of the local council.

According to initial reports, the two NPP representatives were en route to the council premises this morning when they were reportedly intercepted and taken away by unidentified individuals under suspicious circumstances. Their absence directly impacted the proceedings, causing the scheduled election session to be postponed.

The incident has sparked serious concern among political parties and civil society groups, with calls for an immediate investigation into the alleged abduction. NPP officials have strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the democratic process and intimidate elected representatives.

“This is not just an attack on our party members, but an attack on democracy itself. We demand a full and transparent investigation,” an NPP spokesperson said.

Police have yet to issue an official statement, but sources indicate that an investigation is underway to trace the whereabouts of the missing members and determine the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.

The Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha election has been a closely contested affair, and the absence of the two NPP members may significantly alter the balance of power within the council.
