Opposition Leader Meets UN Human Rights Chief

During the meeting, Mr. Türk engaged in a comprehensive discussion on the current state of human rights in the country, recognizing past efforts while encouraging continued progress.
Mr.Premadasa underscored Sri Lanka’s longstanding commitment to human rights, outlining numerous legislative and policy initiatives taken over the years to safeguard fundamental freedoms and equality.
However, the Opposition Leader also emphasized the need to broaden the national discourse on human rights. "Sri Lanka must adopt a more inclusive and forward-thinking definition of human rights—one that reflects the evolving needs of our diverse society," Premadasa stated.
He further advocated for a new constitutional amendment that would embed this expanded understanding of human rights into the country's legal framework. "A rights-based constitution, grounded in inclusivity and modern principles of dignity and justice, is essential for long-term reconciliation and progress," he added.
The meeting highlighted the shared commitment between Sri Lanka and the international community to strengthen democratic governance, uphold rule of law, and ensure human dignity for all.
