Walk Held at Independence Square to Mark Intl Day Against Drug Abuse

The event brought together government officials, law enforcement agencies, schoolchildren, community organizations, and members of the public in a united stand against drug abuse.
Organized under the theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” the event aimed to raise public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and to encourage collective efforts toward prevention and rehabilitation.
Participants carried placards, banners, and wore T-shirts bearing anti-drug messages as they marched through the historic site. The walk concluded with speeches from key officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Health, the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB), and community leaders.
Speaking at the event, a spokesperson from the NDDCB emphasized the importance of early education and community involvement in combatting the drug menace. “Drug abuse is not just a personal issue—it’s a societal challenge. Events like this help strengthen our resolve to create a drug-free Sri Lanka,” the spokesperson said.
The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987 to reinforce global action and cooperation. Today’s event in Colombo was part of a series of national activities taking place throughout the country in recognition of the day.
