The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a major initiative aimed at digitally transforming general education in Sri Lanka, with the Government of the People’s Republic of China committing US$20 million in funding for the project.

The agreement was reached during President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s official visit to China in January this year, where both nations agreed to accelerate the implementation of the initiative.

The project seeks to modernize the educational infrastructure in the country and enhance digital learning opportunities for students and teachers alike.

Under the proposed plan, 500 selected schools across the island will be equipped with essential digital tools and infrastructure. A model smart classroom will also be established as part of the initiative to demonstrate and test new educational technologies and teaching methods.

In addition, a network operations management unit, a program operations center, and a conference facility will be developed within the “Isurupaya” premises, the administrative hub of the Ministry of Education.

The proposal was submitted to the Cabinet by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in her capacity as the Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Training, and received unanimous approval.

Officials emphasized that the initiative marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in education and aligns with the government's broader vision of building a knowledge-based economy through the integration of technology in education.
