22 students suspended from Eastern University over ragging incident

Twenty-two students have been suspended from Eastern University in Oluvil over an incident involving ragging.

Footage of a group of students subjecting newcomers to ragging circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention. The Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University, Professor S. M. Junaideen, has taken disciplinary action by suspending the 22 students who were allegedly involved in inhuman ragging of new students.

The university has stated that an internal investigation is also underway, conducted by a committee comprised of university lecturers. Following the conclusion of this investigation, further action regarding the 22 students is expected to be decided.

Meanwhile, the Akkaraipattu Police have launched their own investigation into the incident. Reports indicate that statements have begun to be recorded from the involved students as of yesterday.

In response to such incidents, the Ministry of Education has initiated the establishment of a National Task Force to Prevent Ragging, with representatives from several institutions related to the education sector, including universities.
