Dr. Maheshi Wijerathna, the only neurosurgeon at Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, has been further remanded until July 8 along with three others over allegations of facilitating the sale of a surgical item at inflated prices.

The Bribery Commission told the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that Dr. Wijerathna allegedly instructed patients to buy an "EVD" device externally through a private institution she is linked to, despite its availability at the hospital for Rs. 17,500. Patients reportedly paid between Rs. 150,000 and Rs. 250,000 for the item.

Statements have been recorded from 88 patients, and the Commission noted 92 more complaints were received on its hotline on June 23 alone. A prior complaint was allegedly settled with a Rs. 200,000 payment, and the complainant has since received death threats, prompting the Commission to oppose bail.
