Nearly 2 Tons of Heroin and Ice Seized in Five Months - Minister Wijepala

Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala announced that nearly two tons of heroin and crystal methamphetamine have been seized by law enforcement over the past five months. He made the statement during a media briefing held ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed on June 26.
Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya also provided updates on anti-narcotics operations since the new government took office on September 23, 2024. According to him, authorities have confiscated 1,253 kg of heroin, 2,121 kg of crystal meth, 12,439 kg of cannabis, 22 kg of cocaine, 1.6 million narcotic pills, and nearly 1 million other tablets.
Both officials emphasized the importance of ongoing nationwide operations and rehabilitation efforts aimed at reducing drug demand and supporting recovery.
