Ashoka Kottahachchi of the National People’s Power (NPP) has been elected as the Mayor of the Matale Municipal Council with 12 votes. M. Morgan of the Labour Congress was appointed Deputy Mayor unopposed.
The election proceeded despite a walkout by 10 councillors, including members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), in protest of an allegedly ineligible councillor’s presence. No party currently holds a clear majority in the council.
