The World Bank Group has approved a new $150 million program aimed at supporting Sri Lanka's transition to a clean, reliable, and affordable energy future. The initiative, titled Secure, Affordable, and Sustainable Energy for Sri Lanka, is designed to help the country reduce its dependence on costly fossil fuel imports and accelerate its adoption of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

The World Bank highlighted that the program will focus on strengthening the resilience and sustainability of Sri Lanka’s power sector. By promoting the development of renewable energy infrastructure and improving energy efficiency, the project is expected to contribute significantly to the nation’s long-term energy security and climate goals.

"This program represents a crucial step forward in Sri Lanka’s energy transition," said a World Bank spokesperson. "By investing in cleaner energy sources, Sri Lanka can reduce its exposure to volatile fuel markets and lay the foundation for a greener economy."

The initiative aligns with Sri Lanka's broader strategy to diversify its energy mix and achieve carbon neutrality in the coming decades. It is also expected to bring long-term economic benefits by lowering electricity costs and improving energy access for communities across the country
