Lakshman Jayawardena, the Vice Chairman of the Eppawala Cooperative Society, has formally lodged a complaint with the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) regarding the alleged misappropriation of Rs. 27.5 million in public funds by former President Maithripala Sirisena.

According to the complaint, the funds—reportedly drawn from the President’s Fund in 2019—were allocated for the construction of a conference hall on land belonging to the Eppawala Cooperative Society. Jayawardena claims the expenditure was unauthorized and constitutes a misuse of state resources for purposes unrelated to the official duties of the Presidency.

“This is not merely a matter of accounting discrepancies,” Jayawardena stated. “We believe this represents a clear violation of public trust and misuse of government funds allocated for social welfare and development.”

The FCID has acknowledged receipt of the complaint and is expected to launch a preliminary inquiry into the allegations. If substantiated, the case could prompt further legal scrutiny and potential prosecution under Sri Lanka’s financial and anti-corruption laws.

Neither former President Sirisena nor his representatives have publicly responded to the allegations as of this writing.
