The historic foot pilgrimage from Jaffna to Kataragama began today, with over 30,000 devotees expected to participate. This annual cultural and spiritual journey passes through ecologically sensitive areas, including Yala and Kumana National Parks.

Minister of Environment Dr. Dammika Pallepola has urged devotees to conduct the pilgrimage without the use of polythene or plastic, emphasizing the need for an environmentally friendly, "green pilgrimage." The Ministry of Environment and the Department of Wildlife Conservation are actively working to ensure eco-conscious practices throughout the journey.

In past years, large amounts of litter left behind have posed serious threats to wildlife and ecosystems. Ranjan Marasinghe, Director General of Wildlife Conservation, confirmed that strict measures are in place to protect both devotees and the environment.

He also announced a ban on drone usage and filming within the parks and warned that legal action will be taken against any harmful activities.
