The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court was today (19) informed that the controversial batch of imported immunoglobulin vials—at the centre of a national health scandal—contained harmful bacteria and dangerously high levels of salt, rendering them hazardous to human health.

Deputy Solicitor General Lakmali Girihagama made the revelation during court proceedings related to the high-profile case involving the importation of substandard immunoglobulin vials. Former Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella and several senior officials of the Ministry of Health have been named as suspects in the case.

Presenting findings before the court, Girihagama stated that laboratory tests confirmed the presence of highly dangerous types of bacteria and toxic salt concentrations in the vials, raising serious concerns about their impact on patients and the integrity of the country’s medical procurement processes.

The Attorney General's Department further informed the court that the investigation into the incident has now been concluded. The conclusion of the probe is expected to accelerate legal proceedings against those implicated in the scandal.

The case has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with calls for accountability and transparency in public health procurement systems. The matter is scheduled to be taken up again in due course as legal proceedings continue.
