2025 Esala Perahera to begin on July 25

The announcement was made during a special meeting held at the Golden Weapon Chamber of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, where the festival’s schedule and organizational activities were discussed with religious and cultural officials. Kap Situweema will mark the beginning of five days of internal processions within the temple premises.
The first Kumbal Perahera, the initial street procession, will take place on July 30, continuing nightly through August 3.
The Randoli Perahera, the grander series of processions, will begin on August 4.
The festival will culminate with the final Randoli Maha Perahera on the night of Nikini Poya, August 8, considered the most sacred and spectacular night of the Perahera.
The Esala Perahera, renowned for its vibrant traditional dances, decorated elephants, fire performers, and religious rituals, attracts thousands of local and international visitors each year. It is held in honor of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, preserved at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) in Kandy.
The Diyawadana Nilame emphasized the importance of maintaining the sanctity, discipline, and cultural integrity of the procession while ensuring the safety and smooth coordination of this large-scale event.
Authorities urge the public and visitors to cooperate with security and logistical arrangements, as preparations are now underway to uphold the centuries-old tradition with grandeur and reverence.
