The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the drafting of amendments to the Protection of Rights of Elders Act No. 9 of 2000, aiming to enhance support for the country’s growing elderly population.

With approximately 2.7 million citizens aged 60 and above as of mid-2024—and projections indicating seniors will make up nearly a quarter of the population by 2052—the move addresses urgent demographic shifts.

The proposed amendments, aligned with the national policy vision “Pohosath Ratak  Lassana Jeewithayak”, seek to strengthen social, economic, physical, and spiritual support systems to ensure a dignified and meaningful retirement for older adults.

The resolution, presented by the Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, authorizes the Legal Draftsman to prepare the revised bill for parliamentary review.
