The government has decided to implement a special fixed deposit scheme for senior citizens, as proposed in the 2025 Budget Speech.

 Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization, and National Development, to implement this special fixed deposit scheme under the following conditions:

The scheme will be applicable to fixed deposits opened by Sri Lankan citizens aged 60 years or above during the period from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.

The fixed deposit term will be 12 months (one year), with a maximum deposit amount of LKR 1 million.

The interest rate paid will be the higher of the following two options:

The Average Weighted Fixed Deposit Rate (AWFDR) plus an additional 3% per annum, or

The published fixed deposit rate of the relevant bank plus 3% per annum.
