Vraie Cally Balthazaar of the National People’s Power (NPP) has been elected as the new Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). She secured 61 votes in a secret ballot, defeating Riza Zarook of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), who received 54 votes.
The decision to hold a secret ballot was unanimously approved, despite initial calls from the SJB and United National Party (UNP) for an open vote. Balthazaar now assumes leadership of the CMC following a closely contested election.
