The newly elected Colombo Municipal Council held its inaugural session today at 9:30 a.m., presided over by Sarangika Jayasundara, Commissioner of the Department of Local Government of the Western Province.
Tensions quickly flared during the session over the method of electing the new Mayor. A disagreement arose between parties on whether the vote should be conducted through a secret ballot or an open vote.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the United National Party (UNP) are pushing for an open vote, while other factions insist on a secret ballot.
Two candidates have been officially nominated for the mayoral position Vraie Cally Balthazaar from the National People’s Power (NPP) and Riza Zarook from the SJB.
Debate continues as council members agreed on the voting process.
