The Department of Irrigation has issued a safety advisory after three sluice gates of the Polgolla Reservoir were opened earlier today. According to the engineer in charge of the dam, each gate has been opened to a width of two feet to manage rising water levels.

As a result, water flow into the Mahaweli River has significantly increased, prompting the Department to urge all individuals and communities residing or engaging in activities along the river—from below the Polgolla Dam to the Victoria Reservoir—to remain cautious and vigilant.

Officials warn that the sudden surge in river flow may pose risks to those bathing, fishing, or using the river for transportation or irrigation purposes. The public is advised to follow updates from local authorities and avoid unnecessary contact with the river during this period.
