Dr. Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director (FDMD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), arrived in Colombo today for a two-day official visit, marking the first visit by a serving IMF FDMD to Sri Lanka in nearly two decades, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL).

Dr. Gopinath is scheduled to meet with senior Government officials, representatives of civil society, and leaders from the business community.

Speaking upon her arrival, Dr. Gopinath expressed her commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and long-term stability.

“I look forward to engaging with Government officials, civil society, and business leaders to better understand the country’s economic challenges and to explore ways to build a more resilient and inclusive future,” she said.

During her visit, Dr. Gopinath is expected to discuss ongoing IMF-supported reform efforts, fiscal policy, debt restructuring progress, and strategies to enhance economic growth and governance.

The visit underscores the IMF’s continued support for Sri Lanka as it navigates complex financial and structural reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and fostering sustainable development.
