General Hamilton Wanasinghe, the 11th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and a distinguished military leader, has passed away at the age of 91.

Born in Malwana, a suburb of Colombo, General Wanasinghe was a proud alumnus of Ananda College, where he showed early promise both academically and in extracurricular activities.

A keen sportsman, he served as the Sergeant Major of the school’s Cadet Platoon and was an integral part of the college rifle shooting team, helping it secure several prestigious trophies. His passion for marksmanship continued beyond school, representing Ceylon in the Inter Dominion small bore rifle shooting competitions.

He began his military career in 1954, joining the Ceylon Army as an Officer Cadet. He received his foundational military training at the renowned Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom. Upon completion, he was commissioned into the Ceylon Artillery as a Second Lieutenant.

Throughout a career spanning decades, General Wanasinghe held numerous key positions within the military’s hierarchy. His leadership, strategic vision, and commitment to national service were recognized when he was appointed the 11th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army in 1988. 

His tenure as Commander was marked by professionalism and dedication during a critical period in the nation's history.

General Wanasinghe’s legacy is one of discipline, service, and excellence. His contributions to the Sri Lanka Army and the country remain deeply respected.
