The Department of Meteorology has issued a comprehensive weather warning for 12 June 2025, forecasting widespread showers, strong winds, and rough sea conditions across multiple regions of the country.

Showers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and North-Western provinces. Heavy rainfall — approximately 100 mm — is likely in parts of Sabaragamuwa province as well as Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Kalutara, Galle, and Matara districts.

A few showers are also expected in the Northern province and Anuradhapura district.

 Strong Winds:

Strong winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph are expected at times over:

The western slopes of the Central Hills

Northern, North-Central, Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-Western, and Southern provinces

Trincomalee district

The public is urged to take adequate precautions to prevent damage from temporary, localized strong winds.

Marine Weather Warning (Next 24 Hours):

 Rain:

Showers will occur in the sea areas off the coast stretching from Puttalam to Hambantota, via Colombo and Galle.

 Winds:

Winds will be south-westerly, ranging from 35–45 kmph, increasing up to 60–70 kmph at times.

Affected sea regions include:

Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar

Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota

Other sea areas will experience winds of 30–40 kmph, which may increase up to 50–55 kmph off the coast from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu.

Sea Conditions:

Very rough seas are expected off the coast from:

Chilaw to Kankasanthurai (via Puttalam, Mannar)

Galle to Pottuvil (via Hambantota)

Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised not to venture into these areas until further notice.

Rough seas are likely in the coastal areas from:

Chilaw to Galle via Colombo

Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu

Wave heights of 2.5–3.0 meters are expected from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota (note: this refers to open sea conditions, not land impact).

Safety Advisory:

The Met Department urges the general public, particularly fishing and naval communities, to stay alert and follow official guidance. Travel by sea in the affected areas is strongly discouraged until weather conditions improve.
