Train services disrupted on upcountry line due to sinkhole near Kandy

According to the Department of Railways, the sinkhole formed near the Kandy Courthouse Complex, causing a significant cavity beneath the railway tracks. In response, all train movements on this section of the line have been halted as a precautionary safety measure.
Railway engineers and geotechnical experts have been dispatched to assess the extent of the damage and to initiate immediate repair work. “Passenger safety is our top priority. We are working to stabilize the affected area and restore services as soon as possible,” a railway spokesperson stated.
Passengers have been advised to use alternative transportation methods until further notice. Updates on the progress of repairs and the resumption of services will be provided regularly by the Department of Railways.
