Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has voiced strong concerns following the controversial release of a convicted fraudster who was not listed among the 388 prisoners officially approved for presidential pardon.

The incident has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny over the transparency and fairness of the presidential pardon process.

"Yet this action directly contradicts those pledges and raises troubling questions about political favoritism and backdoor deals."

The Vesak pardons are an annual tradition in Sri Lanka, aimed at granting clemency to inmates who demonstrate good behavior and meet specific legal criteria. However, the irregular release of an unlisted individual has prompted demands for an independent investigation and greater oversight of the process.

Legal analysts and civil society groups have echoed Opposition leaders’s concerns, warning that selective or unauthorized pardons could undermine public trust in the justice system.

He called on the government to release the full documentation surrounding the case and to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
