Sri Lanka Launches Digitalization of Television Broadcasting

The ambitious initiative aims to replace Sri Lanka’s aging analog terrestrial broadcasting system, which has served the nation for over 46 years, with a cutting-edge digital terrestrial broadcasting platform. This transition is expected to enhance broadcast quality, increase spectrum efficiency, and provide viewers with a richer and more reliable media experience.
Speaking at the event, Minister Jayatissa emphasized the significance of the project: “This is a historic moment for Sri Lanka. Transitioning to digital broadcasting is not just a technological upgrade—it’s a national priority that aligns with our vision for a digitally inclusive society.”
The engineering consultancy phase will involve a comprehensive study and strategic planning for the digital rollout, including infrastructure assessment, network design, and technical recommendations to ensure a smooth transition across the island.
The digitalization project is seen as a critical step in aligning Sri Lanka’s broadcasting standards with global norms, fostering innovation, and supporting the growth of the country’s media and entertainment sectors.
The project is expected to be implemented in phases, with nationwide digital coverage projected to be completed within the next few years.
