President Honored with “Maha Mahendra Prasadini”

The title was bestowed by the Chief Incumbent of Mihintale Raja Maha Viharaya, Most Venerable Walawahengunawe Dhamarathana Thera, during a special ceremony held at the sacred site, considered the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
This year’s Poson Festival marked a significant milestone with large-scale state involvement, ensuring the successful coordination of religious activities, public services, and pilgrim welfare across the island. President Dissanayake’s direct support and leadership were praised by the Maha Sangha and lay devotees alike.
In his brief address following the ceremony, President Dissanayake emphasized the importance of safeguarding Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage and promoting spiritual harmony in society. “It is both an honor and a responsibility to serve this sacred tradition and ensure its values are preserved for future generations,” he stated.
The Poson Festival commemorates the arrival of Arahant Mahinda Thera in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE, which led to the introduction of Buddhism in the country. Mihintale, where the encounter between Arahant Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa took place, remains a central site for religious observance during Poson.
The conferment of the honorary title “Maha Mahendra Prasadini” — symbolizing a noble patron of the Dhamma — is seen as a rare and distinguished recognition from the Buddhist clergy.
