A potential railway tragedy was narrowly averted thanks to the quick actions of Anura Samantha Fernando from Egoda Uyana, Moratuwa. On June 5, while walking near the tracks, Fernando was alerted by a resident to damage on a rail section.
Realizing the urgency, he rushed toward the oncoming office train on the southern coastal line, waving a red cloth to warn the driver. The train was stopped in time.
Moments later, a second train approached on the same track, unaware of the halted train ahead. The second train's driver, acting swiftly, applied an emergency brake and avoided a collision.
In recognition of their bravery and quick thinking, Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake yesterday presented Fernando with a cash reward and a certificate of appreciation. The train driver who helped prevent the second accident was also honored for his decisive action.
